Types of Headaches and Possible Causes
- Tension Headaches: These are the most common type of headache, usually caused by muscle tension in the head, neck, and shoulders. Stress, poor posture, and anxiety are common triggers.
- Migraines: Migraines are a type of headache that can cause severe pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound. They are often triggered by certain foods, stress, changes in sleep patterns, or hormonal changes.
- Cluster Headaches: These are extremely painful headaches that typically occur in cycles or clusters, often in one side of the head. They may be triggered by alcohol, tobacco use, or changes in sleep patterns.
- Sinus Headaches: Sinus headaches are caused by inflammation or infection in the sinuses. They are typically accompanied by congestion, facial pain, and pressure.
- Rebound Headaches: Also known as medication overuse headaches, these headaches are caused by frequent or excessive use of pain relievers or other headache medications.
- Hormonal Headaches: Hormonal changes, such as those that occur during menstruation or menopause, can cause headaches.
- Caffeine Withdrawal Headaches: People who regularly consume caffeine may experience headaches when they try to reduce their caffeine intake or quit altogether.
- Exertion Headaches: These are caused by physical exertion, such as lifting heavy objects, running, or coughing. They are more common in people who have high blood pressure or other cardiovascular problems.
